The MOSE system certainly comes with high construction and maintenance costs, and there's no doubt it has an environmental impact. It only activates during exceptional high tides (from 110 cm, measured at Punta della Salute). While work began in 2003, the entire project was only completed in June this year. So, in my view, it's too early to draw any definitive conclusions. We'll need to see how it performs over time, especially with the increasing impact of climate change, which could lead to more frequent activations. It's definitely not an easy topic!
Do you feel the MOSE system has been effective so far?
It seems like an amazing feat of engineering, but I've gotten mixed messages about whether it was worth the cost -- and inevitable corruption .
